Wynnum facts that matter
Bayside, with tide warnings
Brisbane City Council warns that higher than predicted tides can bring minor localised flooding to bayside, riverside and low-lying areas. People in tidal flood areas signed up to Brisbane Severe Weather Alerts may get creek flood alerts at those times too.
Mostly houses, some units
At the 2021 Census, 70.8% of the suburb's occupied homes were separate houses, 16.2% flats or apartments and 12.8% townhouses or semis.
A third rented
34.6% of homes were rented and 28.3% owned outright.
More homes planned near the station
Council's Wynnum Centre precinct plan, part of Brisbane City Plan 2014 since 12 June 2026, plans for more housing choice close to transport around Wynnum Central station.
Why gullies overflow in storms
Urban Utilities says stormwater gets into the sewer through incorrect plumbing connections, low-lying overflow relief gullies and cracked pipes or maintenance holes. Sewer pipes are typically designed for five times the average dry weather flow, yet they're far narrower than stormwater pipes, so they fill quickly.
A gully has to sit at least 75 mm above the surrounding ground so it doesn't take in rainwater. If yours floods often, Urban Utilities says a cap can be fitted to raise it. Only a licensed plumber should alter one.
Before the next big storm
- Check that roof, driveway and patio stormwater pipes don't run into the sewer or the gully.
- Make sure nothing is sitting on the gully grate.
- Find your inspection opening, so you can see whether it's holding water when trouble starts.
- Search your address on Council's Flood Awareness Map for creek, river and storm tide likelihood.
- Sign up for Brisbane Severe Weather Alerts.
If sewage comes up
If the gully or inspection opening is overflowing outside, or several houses are affected, ring Urban Utilities' 24/7 line. If it's inside, owners call their insurer and renters the property manager or landlord. Urban Utilities also uses smoke testing to find where stormwater is getting into its sewer.
What we would do
If your gully only overflows in heavy rain, ask a plumber to look for stormwater connected to the sewer, and to check the gully's height, before paying for a drain clear-out. A dry-weather overflow points to a blockage instead. If that blockage turns out to be in Urban Utilities' pipe, pay the plumber, keep the invoice and lodge your own claim.
