Start with the type, not the badge
A brand name tells you who made the unit. It won't tell you whether a heat pump, solar, gas or electric system suits your house, or what your state allows.
In Victoria, for example, a worn-out gas system in an existing home has to be replaced with an efficient electric one from 1 March 2027 (check current rules). Settle the type with the types compared, then come back to brands.
What to compare between brands
- Is the exact model on the register? STCs only apply to models listed with the Clean Energy Regulator.
- Is it an eligible product? Solar Victoria's rebate covers eligible products bought through an authorised retailer.
- What voids the warranty? Read the conditions as well as the length. Some warranties exclude tanks used with water outside the maker's quality limits.
- Can a plumber near you service it? Parts and know-how matter more once the unit is on the wall.
Questions to ask about any brand
- Which of this brand's models are listed on the STC register?
- What does the tank warranty cover, and what would void it?
- What does the manual say about checking the anode?
- Do you fit this brand often, and can you get its parts quickly?
Why we don't rank brands
We haven't found independent failure rates for hot water brands that we trust, so we won't pretend to have them. Each brand guide below covers what the brand makes, what we could confirm, and what to ask. The plumber who installs the system matters too, which is why we match you with one who specialises in hot water.
