Plumbers in the Northern Territory Check before work starts.

The Northern Territory's government sites were closed to our research, so we couldn't confirm its regulator, register or licence classes from official pages. Rather than guess, this page sticks to what you can check yourself and the federal scheme that applies everywhere. We match your job with one plumber who specialises in it and holds a current NT licence.

Four checks before an NT plumber starts

  1. Ask for the licence number

Get it before anyone picks up a tool. A plumber who holds a licence can give it to you on the spot.

  2. Confirm it with the Territory

Contact the NT body that licenses plumbers and drainers, and confirm the name, the number and that the licence is current. Our licence check guide walks through each state and territory.

  3. Ask about the paperwork

Find out whether your job needs a certificate of compliance, who lodges it and when you'll receive a copy. Get the answer in writing.

  4. Get a written quote

It should name the business, its licence number and the work. Our quote checklist lists what else belongs on it.

Hot water in the Territory

We haven't confirmed whether an NT hot water replacement needs a tempering valve. Raise it before the job is quoted, because it changes the parts list.

Storage temperature matters wherever you live. According to the Australian Building Codes Board, storing water at 60°C or hotter significantly reduces Legionella growth.

STCs are federal, so they apply in the NT too. An eligible air source heat pump must be under 425 L, or a solar water heater under 700 L, and the model must be on the register. The system must also meet the Territory's installer licensing requirements. The scheme ends in 2030: see STCs explained.

Victoria's 2027 gas hot water rule doesn't reach the Territory. We haven't found an NT rule on what may replace an old system, so check before you buy.

Warning signs regulators elsewhere have acted on

  • A fast inspection, a verdict that the job is complex and urgent, then a large deposit before anyone returns. Consumer Affairs Victoria warned about this in 2025.
  • Several business names that turn out to be one company. An ACT court fined a plumbing firm over nine names presented as unrelated.
  • No written quote and no itemised invoice. NSW listed both among the practices of two proxy businesses it banned in 2026.

Questions people ask

Who licenses plumbers in the Northern Territory?

We couldn't confirm it from official NT pages, so we don't name a body here. Ask the plumber for their licence number and who issued it, then check it with that body.

Can I get STCs on a heat pump in Darwin?

STCs are a federal scheme, so they aren't limited by state. The model must be on the register, and the installation must meet NT licensing requirements.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
