Plumbers on Bribie Island Island water, coastal ground.

Bribie Island is part of the City of Moreton Bay, and Unitywater supplies its water and sewerage. Most homes on the island are owned outright, so the pipes on your block are usually your call. Let us know what has gone wrong and we'll match you with a licence-checked plumber who specialises in it.

What shapes plumbing on Bribie

Four suburbs, one council

Bongaree, Bellara, Banksia Beach and Woorim all fall within the City of Moreton Bay, so Unitywater's rules apply right across the island.

Owned outright, mostly

In the ABS Bribie Island area at the 2021 Census, 53.7% of occupied homes were owned outright, against 29.1% across Queensland. 73.1% were separate houses and 17.8% townhouses, terraces or semis.

Water from the Bellara reservoir

The island draws on the Bribie Island water reservoir at Bellara. Its water is disinfected with chlorine, not chloramine, and samples from January to July 2026 averaged 0.808 mg/L total chlorine.

A bigger main on the way in

In March 2026 Unitywater started laying 300 metres of new pipeline along Bribie Island Road at Caboolture, upgrading the main that feeds the island. It expected to finish in mid-2026.

About the island's water

Unitywater says normal chlorine levels in its pipes run up to 1.5 mg/L, well under the guideline limit of 5 mg/L, and that Bribie's water stays within the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. Seqwater's pH change in August 2026 did not reach Bribie customers.

If water looks or tastes wrong at your place, a plumber can check the pipes and fittings from the meter in, which Unitywater says the owner maintains.

Before anyone digs

Moreton Bay's Council says acid sulfate soils are often found in low-lying coastal areas around the bay. Disturbed and exposed to air, they make sulfuric acid, which can corrode concrete and steel, pipes included.

If your property has them, earthworks may need development approval. We don't know which Bribie lots are affected, so ask Council before a new drain, tank or pool trench is dug.

Tides, storms and flood reports

Council lists tidal inundation and storm tide inundation among the four main types of flooding in its area. Both affect low-lying coastal land, and a property can face more than one type. Its flood check property report gives Council's latest accepted flood information for an address. We never guess a property's flood risk; that report is the place to look.

A blocked toilet or sewer

Slow drains, gurgling and a toilet that rises after flushing are the usual early signs. A licensed plumber is the first call when the problem is in your pipes or nobody is sure. If the plumber finds the blockage in Unitywater's pipe, they should stop and call Unitywater instead of clearing it.

For more, see blocked drains in Brisbane and our guide to the overflow relief gully, the grated outlet that lets a blocked sewer spill outside. On the mainland side, read our Caboolture page.

What we'd do on Bribie

Planning a trench for a new drain, tank or pool? Get Council's flood check report for your address and ask whether acid sulfate soils are mapped for your lot, because both change what goes into the ground. For a blocked drain, have the plumber find where the blockage is before anything is dug up. We'll connect you with a licence-checked drain or leak specialist for the job.

Questions people ask

Is Bribie Island's water chlorinated or chloraminated?

Chlorinated. Unitywater says parts of its network use chloramine, but the water supplied to Bribie Island, from the reservoir at Bellara, does not.

Sewage is overflowing in my street on Bribie. Who do I call?

Unitywater, straight away: it asks people to report wastewater overflowing in a yard, a street or a public place. Keep children and pets away from it.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
