What sets a Shailer Park job apart
Council runs the sewer
Logan City Council, not Urban Utilities, owns the mains here. Its part of the sewer runs up to and including the first inspection opening on your property connection, jump up included. The house drain upstream of that opening belongs to you.
Mostly big family houses
At the 2021 Census, 89.8% of the suburb's occupied homes were separate houses and 61.6% had 4 or more bedrooms. Just 19.4% were rented, against 33.1% across Queensland.
An estate sold from 1973
Council's suburb history says Shailer Park takes in the Kimberley Park estate, marketed from 1973. That dates the selling, not every house, so ask what your drains are made of before agreeing to a fix.
Water in the 'good' band
Logan Water puts its supply in the guidelines' good quality range, 60 to 200 mg/L of hardness, but warns hard water can still scale up hot water systems.
Blocked sewer: Logan pays the drainer, not you
When a drainer you called proves the blockage is in Council's sewer, Logan Water reimburses that drainer for their time on site, provided you or your agent authorise the invoice.
The drainer must ring Logan Water as soon as they suspect Council's main, or within two hours of starting, and must never push roots or rubbish into Council's pipe. Ask whether they work to this procedure.
Logan Water will also clear a private house drain for a fee if the owner asks; tenants need the owner's or agent's say-so unless health is at risk.
Is it a hidden leak? Logan's meter test
Stop all water use
Turn off every tap, appliance and irrigation system, but leave the stop tap at the meter on. Note the reading.
Wait an hour
Use nothing for at least one hour, then read the meter again. If it has moved, water is escaping somewhere.
Work out whose leak it is
Logan Water repairs leaks up to and including the meter. Anything on the property side of the meter connection is the owner's, and a leak detection specialist can find it.
Gullies, downpipes and roof water
The overflow relief gully is the grated outlet near the house that lets sewage spill outside if the drain blocks. The owner keeps it properly fitted, and Logan asks that no downpipe or tank overflow drains into it.
Roof water needs its own lawful outlet in Logan: the kerb and channel, an inter-allotment roof water pipe, or a Council drainage easement or reserve. See our stormwater page.
What we would do
If two or more fixtures are slow at once, find the inspection opening and see whether it's holding water before anyone digs. Hire a drainer who already knows Logan Water's procedure, and sign off their invoice quickly if the fault turns out to be in Council's main, because their reimbursement depends on it. Then check the plumber on the QBCC's registers.

Our Logan page covers the wider council area. For a specific job, start with blocked drains, hot water or an emergency plumber, and we'll pair you with someone who handles that work every week.
