Plumbers in Everton Park Ready for the smoke test.

Urban Utilities has put Everton Park on its 2026 smoke testing list, looking for downpipes and cracked pipes that let rain into the sewer. If a test turns up a defect at your place, or a drain is already misbehaving, we match you with a licence-checked plumber who specialises in drainage.

Everton Park facts that shape a plumbing job

On the 2026 smoke testing list

Urban Utilities' Wet Weather Overflow Reduction Program names Everton Park among the areas its partners will smoke test this year, checking public sewers and private plumbing for faults and non-compliant connections.

A quarter townhouses

In the 2021 Census, 25.1% of the suburb's occupied homes were townhouses, terraces or semis and 14.5% were flats. Separate houses made up 60.2%, and 40.4% of homes were rented.

On Kedron Brook's map

Brisbane City Council's draft 20-year vision for Kedron Brook, published in September 2026, shows Everton Park among the 14 suburbs the brook passes through. Council wants the waterway to cope better with heavier rain.

Who looks after what

Urban Utilities runs the water and sewer mains here; Brisbane City Council looks after the stormwater drains beyond your boundary.

What happens when the testers come

A notice goes in your letterbox first. You don't need to be home, but crews need safe access around the outside of the house, backyard included. Water and sewer keep working throughout, and the crews carry identification you can ask to see.

If they find a problem, Urban Utilities writes to the owner explaining what has to be fixed. Eligible owners get replacement overflow relief gully and inspection opening caps from Urban Utilities when the old ones are broken or sit too low. Every other fix, such as taking a downpipe off the sewer, is paid for by the owner.

Townhouse blocks and shared pipes

Urban Utilities' dividing line for sewage is the sewer connection point, and in a complex that point can sit on common property. Your water meter may be one of a row in a shared cabinet rather than out by the footpath.

So before anyone digs up a courtyard, ask the body corporate whose pipe it is. A drain plumber can then work on the right section, and the right person gets the bill.

Rain, the brook and your gully

Low gullies are one of the main things the smoke testers look for. An overflow relief gully should stand at least 75 mm above the ground, or have a cap fitted, so rain can't pour into the sewer. Clear away mulch, soil or pot plants that have crept up around yours.

For flooding, Council's Flood Awareness Map shows creek and river flood likelihood and overland flow impact for an address. Our pages on overflow relief gullies and stormwater explain the plumbing side, and Brisbane blocked drains covers a backed-up line.

What we would do

When the notice arrives, walk the yard: find the overflow relief gully, usually near the laundry, and the inspection opening caps, and uncover them. If a defect letter follows, ask a drainage plumber to quote on exactly the items listed and keep the paperwork with the letter. And if a drain is already backing up, don't wait for the test: get it cleared now.
