Plumbers in Tarneit New estates, rural edges.

Most of Tarneit is new housing, yet Wyndham City Council's wastewater plan still maps unsewered land on its north and west sides. Which plumber you need depends on where you are. Say whether it's a new-home snag or a septic problem, and we'll match you with a licence-checked plumber who specialises in that side of plumbing.

Tarneit in four facts

Young, mortgaged and building

At the 2021 Census the suburb's median age was 30. 56.9% of homes were owned with a mortgage, 89.5% were separate houses and only 0.3% were flats.

Wyndham's top suburb for new homes

In April 2026 Wyndham issued building permits for 324 dwellings and 5 units. Tarneit had the most of any suburb, with 170.

Sewer still arriving

Wyndham's 2025 to 2030 wastewater plan says two parts of Tarneit are unsewered or partly unsewered, and both are gradually getting sewer as developers build it.

Septic on the bigger lots

Counting from aerial photos taken in May 2024, the plan found 75 onsite systems in its Tarneit and Truganina area.

Brand new house, no discharge point yet?

Wyndham defines the legal point of discharge as the spot where stormwater leaves your property and enters Council's drains. It can't give you that information until your own lot has a land title, and the title for the whole estate won't do.

So if new stormwater work, such as a garden drain or a tank overflow, needs the discharge point, wait for your title and then apply. Council's page points sewer pipe questions to Greater Western Water's website, but that link covers all of Wyndham. Confirm your retailer on your water bill, since Melbourne has three.

Lifestyle blocks and septic tanks

On the north side, the land still unsewered is mostly lifestyle farming lots, many over 4 hectares, plus some smaller rural living lots. The west and southwest are mostly farmland. Across the municipality, Wyndham estimates about 90% of systems are primary treatment, mostly conventional septic tanks with absorption trenches.

When sewer becomes available, ask a plumber what connecting involves and what happens to the old tank. Until then, a specialist in septic systems is who you want for pump outs, soggy trenches or smells.

Street trees in a new estate

Wyndham says each subdivision's approved landscaping plan shows which street trees will go in and where. Its advice to anyone designing a home is to assume a tree is scheduled outside the property, and it won't remove street trees from those plans to suit a cheaper footing. Keep that in mind when a stormwater line is planned towards the street.

Other jobs: blocked drains in Melbourne, hot water and leak detection.

What we would do

In a new Tarneit home, keep the builder's drainage plan and request your legal point of discharge once the title arrives. On a larger block, first confirm if the house is on sewer or septic, because that decides which specialist you need. Whoever services a septic system should leave you a written report.

Questions people ask

Is all of Tarneit connected to sewer?

No. Wyndham's 2025 to 2030 plan says two sections, in the north and in the west and southwest, are unsewered or partly unsewered, with sewer slowly being added as land is subdivided.

Why can't Wyndham tell me my legal point of discharge yet?

In a new development, Council can only provide it once your specific property has its own land title. The title covering the whole development can't be used.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
