Kambah facts that shape a job
Canberra's largest suburb
The ACT Government calls Kambah the largest suburb in Canberra. It has a group centre and 6 local centres.
Nearly all houses
At the 2021 Census, 84.6% of occupied homes in the suburb were separate houses and just 1.9% flats or apartments. 35.6% were owned outright, against 26.6% across the ACT.
A 1970s and 1980s district
Kambah sits in Tuggeranong district, where most of the public pit and pipe network was built in the 1970s and 1980s. The district's tree canopy is above 20%.
Find your overflow relief gully
The overflow relief gully, or ORG, is the grated outlet outside that lets sewage spill in the yard instead of inside if the drain blocks. Icon Water says it must sit 150mm below the lowest fixture outlet or floor waste inside, with nothing obstructing it.
Icon Water also says ORGs are often blocked, glued in place, buried under landscaping, paving or decks, or wrongly used to drain stormwater. It warns that an insurer may not honour a claim if the drainage doesn't meet Australian Standards. On a Kambah block with years of garden work, check yours is still there and still loose. Our overflow relief gully page shows what a plumber looks for.
Roots, and the tree next to the pipe
Most blockages, Icon Water says, come from roots tapping into pipes, hot fat poured down sinks, objects in the system, or pipes broken by digging or heavy vehicles. Where roots are the cause and the tree is protected, the rules matter. The protection zone takes in the area under the canopy, a 2-metre band around its edge and a 4-metre band around the trunk, and groundwork there needs approval first. Ask about relining before anyone plans a trench.
Replacing hot water
Nothing in the ACT forces a working gas hot water system out. The ACT Government suggests going electric gradually, as each appliance needs replacing, which can save replacing the same appliance twice when parts of the gas network start shutting down from the mid-2030s.
It also says hot water heat pumps work well in the ACT's cold climate, and that an electric storage system over 10 years old might be due for a more efficient replacement. Compare options on our Canberra hot water replacement page.
What we would do
Walk around the house and find the overflow relief gully today, not during a blockage. If it is under pavers, glued shut or catching roof water, have it put right while a plumber is next on site. That keeps a blocked sewer spilling outside the house, and avoids handing an insurer a reason to refuse a claim.
