Smell gas right now?
Leave the building and keep others out. Don't use switches, phones or anything that could spark inside. From outside, ring the gas emergency number on your gas bill, then book a licensed gas fitter to find the leak.
Gas in Toowoomba
Its own network
Allgas Energy owns the gas network south of the Brisbane River and runs separate networks in Toowoomba and Oakey. Not every Toowoomba street is connected, so confirm supply before you buy a gas appliance.
Heaters work hardest in frost
The old Toowoomba station averaged 27.4 days of ground frost a year from 1957 to 1998. Have gas heaters checked before winter rather than during the first cold snap.
Mostly freestanding houses
At the 2021 Census, 82.7% of occupied homes in the Toowoomba council area were separate houses, so most gas jobs involve one household's own meter and pipework.
The licence that covers gas work
Queensland's Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 defines gas work as installing, removing, altering, repairing, servicing or testing a gas system, among other tasks. The Act calls an appliance that burns fuel gas for heat, light or power, and is prescribed by regulation, a type A gas device. Gas work on one without a licence that allows it carries a maximum penalty of 500 penalty units.
Licences aren't all the same. Business Queensland says not every holder may do every type of gas work, so check that the licence matches your job. The RSHQ Portal lets anyone look up a current licence holder, no login needed.
Paperwork after the job
When a gas fitter finishes an installation, they use the RSHQ Portal to give the owner an original copy of the gas system compliance certificate. Where the gas comes from a network such as Allgas, the network operator gets a copy too.
Don't expect a metal plate on the meter. The plate rules changed in July 2025, and most installations no longer need one, caravans aside. If the gas fitter finds something unsafe, they must give you a defect notice.

Questions for a Toowoomba gas fitter
- What is your gas work licence number, and does it cover this appliance?
- Is my street on the Allgas network, or will this run on bottled gas?
- Will I get the gas system compliance certificate through the RSHQ Portal?
- If you find a fault, will you give me a defect notice in writing?
What we would do
Before booking, look up the gas fitter's licence on the RSHQ Portal and make sure it covers your appliance; it takes a minute and no login. Ask for the compliance certificate when the job is done, since there may be no plate to show the work was signed off. If you are weighing gas against electric for hot water or heating, settle whether your street has Allgas supply first, because that decides the option.
