Ivanhoe facts that affect the work
Tree protection across the suburb
Banyule says all its residential areas have tree protection overlays under the Banyule Planning Scheme, and that contractors, plumbers included, need the correct permit to work near a protected tree.
Roots sit shallow
Council's guidance is that the roots that take up water and nutrients are in the top 600 mm of soil. Encroaching on a tree protection zone by 10% or more counts as a major encroachment.
A mix of homes
At the 2021 Census, the suburb of Ivanhoe was 52.8% separate houses, 22.2% townhouses or semis and 24.6% flats. 35.1% of homes were owned outright and 32.6% rented.
Low hardness water
Ivanhoe is in Yarra Valley Water's Ivanhoe sampling area, which averaged 17 mg/L of hardness in 2025-26, against a guideline of 200 mg/L.
Before a trench goes in
Banyule's site rules for protected trees are plain: fence a tree protection zone and keep it free of open trenches or changed soil levels. If a protected tree on your land is damaged during works, Council says you could be fined or prosecuted. So the permit question comes before the excavator.
If roots have broken into a sewer or stormwater pipe near a big tree, ask the drain specialist whether it can be relined rather than dug up. Our tree roots page explains how plumbers find and clear them.
Your sewer and Yarra Valley Water
Yarra Valley Water supplies Ivanhoe. It doesn't reimburse repairs to internal pipes, and how far its own responsibility runs towards your house varies from property to property. Ask it to confirm the point for your address before paying for work near the boundary.
Other common jobs: blocked drains in Melbourne, hot water or a Melbourne gas plumber.
What we would do
If a drain near a large tree keeps blocking, get a CCTV inspection first so you know exactly where the break is and how deep it sits. Take that footage to Banyule's planning team and ask whether the repair needs a permit. Only then compare quotes for digging against relining. Doing it in that order keeps the job inside the rules from day one.
