Southport by the numbers
Apartments first
At the 2021 Census, 54.6% of occupied homes in the suburb were flats or apartments, against 12.5% across Queensland. Separate houses were 23.8%.
Small homes, mostly rented
57.9% of homes were rented. 41.0% had two bedrooms and 17.3% had one.
Checked for inflow
Southport was among the suburbs in the City's Inflow Mitigation Program, which ran from 2020 to 2023 looking for stormwater getting into the sewer.
Drains under the road
In 2026-2027 the City is renewing an under-road culvert at Pohlman and Nerang streets, with new pipes and inlet gullies to cut the risk of road and property flooding.
Renting a unit: who calls the plumber?
If you rent, report a leak or blockage to your agent or landlord in writing, with photos. If water is pouring through a ceiling or sewage is coming up, turn off the water first, then call them.
If you own, check whether the fault is inside your lot or in shared pipework, and tell the body corporate manager early.
Leaks you can't see
City of Gold Coast charges the owner for every litre the meter records, including water lost to a hidden leak. To test, turn off every tap and water-using appliance, note the reading, use nothing for at least an hour, then read it again. If the number has moved, a leak detection specialist can trace where.
Shops and food businesses
Shops and food businesses need more than a home plumber at times. Food businesses are generally required to install a grease arrestor, and any business discharging more than normal household wastewater may need a City trade waste permit. See commercial plumbing on the Gold Coast.
What we would do
In a Southport unit, find out whether the leak is on your side before anyone opens a wall. If the meter keeps moving with every tap off, or water is coming from the unit above, tell the body corporate or agent the same day. A leak detection specialist can then trace it methodically, and their written findings help settle who pays.
