Currumbin facts that matter for plumbing
Units beside houses
At the 2021 Census, 41.2% of the suburb's occupied homes were flats or apartments and 45.8% separate houses. 35.7% were owned outright, above Queensland's 29.1%, and 19.8% of dwellings were empty on Census night.
A creek turned into drains
Flat Rock Creek starts on the ridgelines of Currumbin and Tugun Heights and runs to Currumbin Beach. Since the 1960s, sections have become concrete drains, and a concrete pipe at its end empties straight into the ocean.
A creek mouth that closes up
Currumbin Creek is about 20 km long. Tides and drifting sand naturally narrow its mouth, and the City says it needs dredging now and then to minimise flood impacts.
Flooding on the creeks in 2022
Flash flooding reached major levels on Currumbin and Tallebudgera creeks in February and March 2022, affecting homes and businesses in Currumbin Waters, Elanora and Tallebudgera.
If water gets into the house
Power and gas off first
The City's advice is to make sure the electricity and gas are turned off before you go into a flooded building.
Leave the gas pipes alone
Queensland's rule after a flood is that a licensed gasfitter inspects the gas installation and appliances before they're used again. Don't pull out or repair gas pipework during the clean-up.
Check the gully
If sewage came out of the overflow relief gully outside, it did its job. Clear debris so the grate sits loose and uncovered, and don't hose mud or stormwater into it.
Then book the plumbing
Ask for the certificate. Installation work on gas should come with a gas system compliance certificate; for service work or basic repairs, get an itemised tax receipt.
Where your stormwater is allowed to go
Under the City's rules, private stormwater has to discharge to a lawful point, such as the kerb and channel or an inter-allotment drain. Where that isn't feasible, a rubble pit designed by a qualified professional may be allowed instead. It must never go into the sewer.
If a neighbour's runoff is flooding your yard, the City takes reports through its development compliance team.
What we would do
Know where your gas meter or bottle shut-off and your main water tap are before the next big storm, and keep the overflow gully clear of mulch and pot plants. After any flood, get the gas checked by a licensed gasfitter before relighting anything. For the plumbing itself, we can match you with a licence-checked plumber or gas fitter covering Currumbin who specialises in storm and drain work.
