Plumbers in Coolangatta The Queensland side of the line.

Coolangatta is mostly flats, and its creek catchment, the City's southern-most, runs over into New South Wales. On the Queensland side, City of Gold Coast supplies water and sewerage and the QBCC licenses plumbers. Tell us the problem and we match you with a licence-checked plumber who specialises in it and takes jobs in Coolangatta.

What's different about plumbing in Coolangatta

Three in four homes are flats

At the 2021 Census, 76.9% of the suburb's occupied homes were flats or apartments, against 12.5% across Queensland. 41.2% were rented, and the median age was 50.

Many empty on Census night

29.1% of Coolangatta's private dwellings were unoccupied when the Census was taken, more than three times the Queensland figure of 9.3%.

A rebuilt trunk main

The City scheduled works from October 2025 to April 2026 to rebuild the trunk water main on Tweed Street between Dutton and McLean streets, and to fill the old asbestos cement main with grout so it's no longer used.

Wetter than the Seaway

The Coolangatta weather station averages 1,538.5 mm of rain a year, with 16.4 days of 25 mm or more. Its wettest day on record dropped 369.0 mm.

Which side of the border is the job on?

In the ABS's 2021 boundaries, all of Coolangatta is in the Gold Coast council area. Tweed Heads, over the line, is in New South Wales and the Tweed council area, so the City of Gold Coast's pipe rules stop at the border.

Plumbing is licensed state by state. In Queensland, check the business and the worker on the QBCC's registers through myQBCC. New South Wales needs a contractor licence for plumbing of any value, with its own public register and its own paperwork. Ask a plumber which state's licence they hold before they start. Our Tweed Heads page covers the New South Wales side.

Rain, the creek and your drains

Coolangatta Creek runs about 8 km from Tugun Hill and Hidden Valley to Kirra Beach, and its catchment takes in most of Coolangatta and stretches into New South Wales. The City has a Warner and Scott Streets upgrade scheduled for November 2026 to July 2027 that includes stormwater work to improve drainage.

On your own property, send roof and yard water to a tank, the kerb or a stormwater pit. It must never run into the overflow relief gully, the grated fitting that lets sewage spill outside instead of through your lowest drain. Stormwater in the sewer is what the City says typically causes wet weather overflows.

What we would do

In a Coolangatta unit, learn who manages the shared drains before anything goes wrong, and keep the body corporate's contact handy. If you own a flat that sits empty, read its meter before you leave and when you return. When a plumber quotes, ask which state's licence they hold and look it up. For a job on the Queensland side, we can match you with a licence-checked plumber for Coolangatta who specialises in that exact problem.

Questions people ask

I live in Tweed Heads. Does this page apply to me?

Not the water, sewer or licence parts. Tweed Heads is in New South Wales, so the City of Gold Coast and the QBCC don't cover it. Start with our Tweed Heads page instead.

Who do I call about water running down a Coolangatta street?

City of Gold Coast. Its supply system, up to and including your water meter, is its responsibility, and it says it looks into major leaks on public land within 24 hours.

The overflow gully outside my building is spilling. What now?

That gully is doing its job: sewage is coming out there rather than inside. Tell the body corporate and get a drain specialist to find the blockage. If it's in the City's sewer, the plumber should report it the same day.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.

We match your job with a local plumber who does this kind of job, licence checked.
