Minto facts that shape a job
Campbelltown City Council
Minto, named after the Earl of Minto, is one of Campbelltown City Council's suburbs, alongside Minto Heights.
Mostly family houses
At the 2021 Census, 79.6% of occupied homes in the suburb were separate houses and 16.1% semis or townhouses. 37.7% were rented and households averaged 3.1 people.
A plumber's report for pipe damage
If a tree is to come out because it's damaging pipes, Council says the application must include a report from a licensed plumber.
Stormwater isn't treated
Council says stormwater generally can't be treated, so whatever washes off roofs, driveways and roads ends up in creeks, rivers and the ocean.
Before you apply to remove a tree
Campbelltown City Council counts a tree as one more than 3 metres tall, with an outside circumference of at least 500mm at ground level, or a crown spread of at least 4 metres. Private trees may need Council approval to prune or remove.
If pipe damage is your reason, the licensed plumber's report is part of the application. Ask for one that says where the roots get in and what condition the pipe is in, with camera footage behind it. That same evidence shows whether a pipe relining job could save both the pipe and the tree. Our CCTV drain inspection page explains what you get.
Plant at the right distance
Council's planting advice is to keep a new tree at least 3 metres from the house, so its roots don't grow against your footings or your stormwater and sewer pipes. Sydney Water goes further for sewer lines, advising against planting trees within 6 metres of wastewater pipes.
What goes down which drain
The street drain and the sewer are separate systems. Council says never to tip paint or oil down the drain or sink, and that letting polluted wastewater into stormwater drains, roadside gutters or waterways is an offence.
Inside, Sydney Water says only pee, poo and toilet paper should be flushed. It says non-flushable wet wipes contribute to 75% of wastewater blockages, and that paper towels, tissues, cotton buds and hair don't break down either. A slow toilet or gurgling floor drain is the early warning: see blocked drains in Sydney.
Hot water for 3.1 people
Households here are larger than the NSW average of 2.6, so check your hot water system suits the number of people using it. The hot water size tool helps, and hot water repairs in Sydney covers what a plumber checks when it stops working.
What we'd do in Minto
Get the plumber's report before you lodge a tree application, and ask that it shows where the roots are getting in and the state of the pipe. Campbelltown City Council needs it anyway, and it tells you whether a reline would fix the problem without losing the tree. Then let us match you with a drain specialist who can do the camera inspection and write it up.
