Cabramatta: the facts behind the job
Houses, townhouses and units
At the 2021 Census, the suburb's occupied homes split three ways: 38.8% separate houses, 38.7% flats and 22.0% townhouses or semis. 47.2% were rented.
Creek flood history
Fairfield City Council records major flooding along lower Prospect Creek and Cabramatta Creek in August 1986 and April-May 1988, and has an adopted 2004 floodplain management study and plan for Cabramatta Creek.
Sydney Water crews listed
A Wastewater Fix update of 4 December 2025 includes Cabramatta among suburbs for work over the next 12 months on stormwater entering the sewer. Directly affected owners get a letterbox notice.
Trees are protected
In Fairfield City, a tree over 4 metres tall or with a branch span over 3 metres may need a Tree Work Permit, and penalties apply for damaging or removing one without it.
Blocked pipe and a claim to Council?
Council's position: local government isn't responsible for plumbing on private property, and the owner keeps it in good order. If you claim against Council over a blocked pipe, the onus of proof is on you.
Part of the process is a Council officer inspecting the exposed section where the blockage happened, and the applicant pays for the excavation to expose it. Have the plumber record the blockage on camera and in writing before anything is backfilled.
Trees on your own block
Removing a tree in Fairfield City needs Council approval unless it's on the undesirable species list, and pruning can need approval too. Council won't normally approve removal for minor damage, such as roots lifting a driveway or path. Check before a root-damaged line is dug up beside a tree.
Your sewer line and Sydney Water's
The private wastewater line is the owner's right to its connection with Sydney Water's main, and Sydney Water notes that it can run past your boundary. Where a private pipe has collapsed under a public footpath or road, Sydney Water may repair it for residential customers, once a licensed plumber confirms digging up the road or footpath is the only way.
For blockages, see blocked drains in Sydney and tree roots in drains. Pipe relining covers repairs without a trench.
What we'd do in Cabramatta
Before lodging any claim with Council, get the plumber to put the cause in writing, with photos or footage of the blocked section. Council will want to see the exposed pipe, and you'll pay for that dig either way, so have the evidence ready. If the roots come from a tree on your own block, check the permit rules before anyone cuts it back. We can match you with a drain specialist who works with roots.
