Newcastle facts that shape a relining job
Your line ends at the junction arm
Hunter Water makes owners responsible for maintaining, repairing and replacing the sewer pipes on their property up to its system. For plumbers, it defines the connection point as the arm of the junction on its sewer main, inside the customer's block. If you suspect your connection point sits outside your property, Hunter Water offers to help work it out.
Smoke tests find broken pipes
Hunter Water smoke-tests the sewer to find cracked, broken or unsealed underground pipes and joints, and downpipes wrongly connected to it. If a test turns up a fault on your land, the repair is yours.
Roots are a named cause
Hunter Water says blockages in its mains usually come from tree roots, grease and wipes, and that broken or collapsed shaft connections can make shafts overflow.
Trees near the line
Private trees are the landowner's responsibility, but City of Newcastle requires pruning, removal or development near them to follow its Newcastle Urban Forest Technical Manual. Check it before roots are cut out of a pipe.
Camera first, quote second
A relining specialist will clean the line and run a camera through it before pricing anything. The footage shows where the cracks, open joints and roots are, how far they run, and where your pipe meets Hunter Water's junction. Ask for a copy.
Relining suits a pipe that still holds its shape. A collapsed or badly sagging section usually has to be dug up and replaced. In a block of units, check who owns the line first: Hunter Water says it does not own or maintain common sanitary drainage, so a shared line belongs to the owners together.
Reline, dig, or call Hunter Water?
| What it usually means | Who to call | |
|---|---|---|
| Cracks, open joints or roots in your line, pipe still round | A candidate for relining | A relining specialist |
| A section that has collapsed or sags and holds waste | Dig and replace that section | A drainer, who books the inspection before backfilling |
| The shaft is full or overflowing, or the fault is past the junction arm | Possibly Hunter Water's main or branch line | Hunter Water, before any plumber |
NSW paperwork for drainage here
Drainage is specialist work in NSW, so the contractor needs a licence that covers it. Check the category on the NSW Public Register before you sign.
Around Newcastle, drainage notices go to Building Commission NSW through MyInspections. Drainage dug in and replaced outside the house has to be booked for inspection when it's finished, before the trench is filled. Ask what the plumber will lodge for a relining job, and expect a Certificate of Compliance at the end either way.
Sewer service diagrams can't be bought in the Newcastle region, according to the NSW Government. The camera footage and any diagram the drainer prepares may be the only record of your line, so keep both.
Questions for a Newcastle relining specialist
- Can I see the footage, and where exactly does my line meet Hunter Water's junction?
- Does the lined section run through the boundary trap, or stop short of it?
- Which sections will you reline, and are any too damaged to line?
- What will you lodge with Building Commission NSW, and when do I get the certificate?
What we would do
Get the camera inspection done and keep the footage before anyone quotes a length of liner. Make sure the quote stops at the arm of Hunter Water's junction, because anything beyond it is Hunter Water's to fix. If roots are the problem, check the tree rules before they are cut. A drain specialist who relines regularly in Newcastle will know where Hunter Water's line starts on a typical block.
