Wyong facts that change the job
Four homes in ten rented
At the 2021 Census, 40.1% of occupied homes in the suburb of Wyong were rented, above the NSW figure of 32.6%. 72.4% were separate houses and 11.0% flats.
A floodplain the SES watches
The SES says heavy rain on waterways such as the Wyong River, Ourimbah Creek and Tuggerah Lake can cause widespread flooding of low ground, and it is working to improve early warnings for the Wyong River floodplain.
A plan for the river
Central Coast Council has consulted on a Wyong River Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan, one of several catchment plans across the region.
One flood policy for two old councils
Council's draft Flood Policy would treat sea level rise the same way in the former Wyong and Gosford council areas. Council says it won't change flood maps or whether a block is flood prone.
Your stormwater, your job
Central Coast Council puts the roof drainage, gutters, downpipes, stormwater pipes and inlet pits on the owner. Every building on the block, sheds included, needs drainage that ends at a legal point of discharge.
Natural overland flow from a neighbour or public land is yours to accept. You can't divert it, redirect it or concentrate it onto the next property. Council investigates when there is evidence of damage and the water has been channelled by a structure or drain, or comes from faulty roof drainage.
Paperwork for Wyong plumbing
Council inspects on-site plumbing across the Central Coast. A licensed plumber lodges a notice of work with Council at least two days before planned work begins. Within two days of finishing, they submit a certificate of compliance, with a copy for the owner, plus a diagram of any sanitary drainage they laid.
In NSW, plumbing, drainage and gas fitting are specialist work, so a contractor licence is needed whatever the job costs. Look the business up on the NSW Public Register before you agree to a quote.
Renting in Wyong
If you rent, report a leak, blockage or hot water failure to your landlord or agent, who arranges the plumber. For a burst pipe, turn the water off at the meter first. Then see emergency plumbing on the Central Coast or blocked drains.
What we would do
If your Wyong block sits low, clear the gutters, downpipes and yard pits before forecast heavy rain, and know where your overflow gully is. If sewage comes up inside, stop using water and contact Council first, as its charter asks. For stormwater pooling against the house, book a plumber who specialises in stormwater rather than building a bund that pushes the water next door.
