Central Coast conditions for hot water
Soft to moderately soft water
That's how Central Coast Council describes its supply. Total hardness averaged 56 mg/L from July to September 2026, and the highest reading over the previous year was 73 mg/L. The guideline value that exists to limit scale is 200 mg/L.
Gosford gets frost
The Bureau's Gosford (Narara Research Station) records, 1965 to 2013, average 14.4 days a year at 2°C or colder and a July mean minimum of 4.7°C. At Norah Head the July mean minimum is 9.9°C. A heat pump draws its heat from the air, so the coldest mornings matter.
Mostly houses
Separate houses made up 78.4% of occupied homes in the Central Coast Council area at the 2021 Census, so most systems here belong to a single home.
Mains gas is available
Jemena's network distributes natural gas on the Central Coast. If your street is connected, a gas unit remains an option.
Before you replace anything
If the tank is leaking, close the cold water valve that feeds it, then turn the power off at the switchboard, or the gas off at the unit. A plumber who specialises in hot water will check the thermostat, element, valves or burner before calling the tank finished.
Council's charter names the hot water service among the fittings the owner installs, maintains and repairs. Renting? Tell the landlord or agent straight away. Our hot water repairs page for the Central Coast covers common faults.
Replacing a system here, step by step
Choose the type first
Heat pump, solar, gas or electric. For a heat pump in a frost-prone yard, ask how the model performs on a cold morning and where the outdoor unit will sit.
Check what can come off the price
Heat pumps and solar may attract an Energy Savings Scheme discount and small-scale technology certificates (STCs). STCs need a registered model: heat pumps under 425 L, solar heaters under 700 L.
Get one written quote
It should show the system, the tempering valve, each discount and the amount you pay.
Install and paperwork
Swapping an existing system is minor work, so no notice of work goes to Council first. You still get a Certificate of Compliance when it's done.
The NSW temperature rule
Every replacement water heater in NSW gets a temperature control device, whatever the type or location, and that includes an identical model. Building Commission NSW's only listed exception is replacing a solar collection panel by itself.
The device keeps water at showers, baths, handbasins and bidets to 50°C. Water is still stored at 60°C or more in the tank, the level that holds back Legionella. See tempering valves.
The Energy Savings Scheme, plainly
The scheme gives a discount on the installed price, through installers partnered with an Accredited Certificate Provider. Those installers operate independently from the NSW Government. Energy NSW's own amounts are marked indicative only, and its rules changed on 7 September 2026, so don't rely on any figure you've read. A minimum payment always applies. If an installer sounds official, ask which accredited supplier they work with. Details are on our NSW discounts page.
What we would do
Have the old unit checked before you replace it: on soft water like the Central Coast's, a failed part is worth ruling out. If it's at the end, decide the type with your coldest mornings in mind, then ask for a single quote that shows the tempering valve, every discount and your share. A local hot water specialist will handle the NSW paperwork and leave the certificate with you.
