Chermside facts
Urban Utilities and Brisbane City
Chermside lies wholly in Brisbane City Council's area, and Urban Utilities lists it on the South East Queensland Water Supply Scheme.
Mostly apartments
At the 2021 Census, 58.7% of the suburb's occupied homes were flats or apartments, against 12.5% across Queensland. Houses made up 21.4% and townhouses or semis 19.8%.
Mostly renters
62.6% of homes were rented, nearly double Queensland's 33.1%. Only 15.0% were owned outright.
More homes planned
Council is preparing a Chermside Centre Suburban Renewal Precinct plan to increase housing choice, with approval and adoption into City Plan planned for mid 2027.
Who to call first
If you rent, report the problem to your property manager or landlord, in writing, straight away. For sewage coming up inside, Urban Utilities says renters should contact the property manager or landlord; owners call their insurer. Urban Utilities can't enter homes or disinfect inside.
A sewage leak on your property is a job for a licensed plumber. If it's coming from pipes in the street, call Urban Utilities instead.
Unit owners and shared pipes
Meters in a complex may sit by each unit or in a central cabinet, and the sewer connection point can be on common property. Pipes up to that point are the owners', so check with the body corporate which ones are shared before booking a repair.
If a hidden leak runs through one main meter, Urban Utilities says the body corporate applies for concealed leak assistance.
Building, renovating and food businesses
Plumbing permits for apartment, office and shop buildings need a Form 1 application and hydraulic plans. A small job with no more than 4 fixtures and no in-ground drainage or trade waste can be fast-tracked. Any business preparing food needs a Trade Waste Approval from Urban Utilities and usually a grease arrestor. See commercial plumbing in Brisbane.
What we'd do in Chermside
Renters: photograph the problem, report it in writing and keep the reply. Owners in a complex: get the body corporate's answer on which pipes are shared before anyone starts. If water is pouring and nobody answers, turn off the isolation valve at the meter. Then we'll match you with a licence-checked emergency plumber or leak specialist.
