Gawler facts that matter to plumbing

Town of Gawler

ABS boundary files place Gawler and the suburbs of Gawler East, Gawler South and Gawler West wholly inside the Town of Gawler's council area.

Mostly houses

At the 2021 Census, 81.2% of occupied homes across the council area were separate houses, 16.6% semis or townhouses and 1.2% flats or apartments. 27.3% were rented.

A new Gawler Tank

SA Water is replacing the 1907 Gawler Tank, a 1.268 ML concrete tank, with a 3 ML tank on the same Calton Road site in Gawler East. It benefits 6,200 customers.

New mains for Gawler East

About 3,011 metres of new water main went in along Martin Road, Concordia, and Sunnydale Avenue and Concordia Road, Gawler East, finished in 2026.

Network works and your taps

SA Water says the Gawler Tank has served the Gawler-Virginia community for over a century and had reached the end of its operational life. Commissioning of the new tank was scheduled for April to July 2026. Separately, a booster pump station at Concordia Road and Barossa Valley Way is being upgraded from November 2025 to early 2027.

If water pressure drops across the whole street, check with SA Water before paying anyone. If it's only your house, a plumber can test for a failed pressure valve or a leak: see water pressure and leak detection in Adelaide.

Dry years move pipes

SA Water names ground movement as the most common cause of its main breaks. When rainfall is low, the soil shrinks and hardens, and more mains fail. Water bubbling up in the footpath or nature strip may be SA Water's main, so report it to SA Water first.

SA Water also has an interactive map of its mains: type in an address, click a main, and see when it was laid and when works are planned.

Questions to ask a Gawler plumber

  • Is the leak on my side of the meter, or should SA Water look at it?
  • Will this work need a certificate of compliance, and when will I get it?
  • If the drain runs near a big tree, does the fix need council approval?
  • Can you show me the fault on camera before I approve the repair?

What we would do

If water is coming up outside your fence line, take a photo and report it to SA Water before booking a plumber; it may be their main. If the wet patch is between the meter and the house, or the bill has jumped with no visible leak, that's a job for a leak detection specialist. With every tap off, watching the meter dial for an hour is a quick first check you can do yourself.
