Taree at a glance
Lots of renters
At the 2021 Census, 37.1% of occupied homes in the suburb of Taree were rented, compared with 32.6% across NSW. 78.2% were separate houses and 9.6% flats or apartments.
Big wet days
Taree Airport AWS averages 1198.3 mm of rain a year (1997 to 2026). Its wettest day on record brought 304.4 mm, enough to test any gutter and stormwater pit.
Occasional frost
The same station averages 6.1 days a year at or below 2°C and 1.4 at or below 0°C, with a lowest reading of -4.0°C.
Renting in Taree: when something leaks
- Turn off the water at the stop tap if a pipe is spraying, then tell the agent or landlord straight away.
- Put the request in writing, with photos and the time you noticed it.
- Sewage coming up through a drain or gully? Keep away from it and report it as urgent.
- Ask who is sending the plumber, so you know who to let in.
For landlords and owners
MidCoast Council's sewer network runs to more than 1100 kilometres of mains. We didn't find a Council page setting out where its sewer pipe ends and the owner's begins, so before paying for a blockage that could be in the street, ask Council where its responsibility starts. Our sewer ownership guide shows how much the line varies between water authorities.
Whoever books the plumber, the NSW paperwork is the same: a Certificate of Compliance once the work is done, with a copy for the person who arranged it. Keep it with the property records.
Septic systems on the Manning
Off the sewer, homes rely on septic and aerated systems. MidCoast Council keeps a register of roughly 13,000 of them across the region. Each needs an approval to operate (ATO), and Council inspects systems in high-risk areas to make sure they're run and maintained properly. Buying a rural block? You can ask Council for a pre-purchase inspection. More on our septic systems page.
Is the plumber licensed?
In NSW, plumbing, drainage and gasfitting are specialist work, and contracting for them needs a contractor licence at any price. The Public Register shows a licence's categories and expiry, any conditions, and any suspension, cancellation or public warning. Check it before work starts. Details on our NSW page and in our licence check guide.
Find a specialist: burst pipes, blocked drains, hot water, stormwater, emergency plumbing.
What we would do
If you rent, report problems in writing and early: a small drip is easier to get fixed than a ruined floor. If you own, get the plumber's licence number on the quote and look it up, and ask MidCoast Council before paying for any blockage near the boundary.
