Sewage spilling from the sewer shaft?
Stay clear and keep people and pets away from it. Stop flushing toilets and using water. Hunter Water says a full or overflowing shaft may mean a blockage in its sewer main or branch line, so call its 24/7 line, listed on its website, before you call anyone else.
Water pouring out: find the path tap
Go to the meter
Hunter Water's path tap is the tap on the water meter frame, usually at the front of the property. It is not the garden tap at the front. Turn it off to stop the supply.
No handle, or it won't budge?
Older meters can have a spindle valve with no visible handle. Hunter Water says you may need a licensed plumber for that, so mention it when you book.
Protect the hot water unit
If the leak is near the hot water system, switch its power off at the switchboard, or turn off its gas.
Book the repair
From the point where your pipes meet Hunter Water's main, the pipes are yours, and so is any damage a failure causes. A plumber who handles bursts can isolate the broken section and get water back to the rest of the house.
Newcastle emergencies, by cause
Flash floods with little warning
City of Newcastle says up to one third of properties are affected by flooding, and the gap between a storm starting and the water rising can be under an hour. Never walk or drive through floodwater. The SES leads the response when homes are flooded.
Rain in the sewer
Hunter Water lists heavy rain and stormwater entering the sewer among the causes of overflowing shafts. A downpipe tied into the overflow relief gully makes it worse, and Hunter Water says that connection is illegal.
Frost is rarely the culprit
The Bureau's Nobbys station averages 0.0 days a year at 2°C or colder, and Williamtown RAAF only 0.5 days at freezing or below. Ice is an unlikely reason for a burst pipe here.
Renting?
Over a third of homes in the City of Newcastle council area were rented at the 2021 Census. Hunter Water's advice to tenants is to go to the managing agent or landlord to get a licensed plumber out.
The rules still apply after dark
NSW exempts emergency work from the Notice of Work that ordinary jobs need, so a plumber can start straight away. The finish line doesn't change: a Certificate of Compliance at the end, with a copy for you.
Whoever contracts for the job needs an NSW contractor licence, however small the fix. NSW also requires the licensee's name and licence number in every ad, so a listing without one is worth questioning. Take thirty seconds on the NSW Public Register before you agree to more than making the site safe.
What can usually wait until morning
- A dripping tap or a cistern that keeps running: close the small stop tap under it.
- One slow drain that still empties, when the sewer shaft is clear.
- A lukewarm hot water system that isn't leaking.
What we would do
Learn where your path tap and sewer shaft are on a calm day, because hunting for them in the rain wastes the minutes that matter. In an emergency, make it safe first, then decide who owns the problem: Hunter Water for a shaft that's overflowing, the SES for floodwater, and a licensed plumber for your own pipes. Ask the plumber to fix only what's urgent tonight and quote the rest in daylight.
