Hot water in Darwin Sun and warmth on your side.

Darwin picks hot water in a climate few other capitals share: strong sun for much of the year and nights that stay warm. We found no NT rule dictating what a replacement must be. Tell us what's on the wall and we'll connect you with a licence-checked plumber who specialises in hot water.

Darwin conditions that shape the choice

Sun for solar

Darwin Airport averages 8.5 hours of sunshine a day across the year, from 10.4 hours in August down to 5.7 in cloudy January (records 1951 to 2025).

Warm air for heat pumps

A heat pump draws its heat from the air, and Darwin's air stays warm. The July mean minimum is 19.3°C, and the lowest temperature on record is 10.4°C.

A lot of rentals

At the 2021 Census, 43.8% of Greater Darwin's occupied homes were rented. If you rent, the system is your landlord's, so start with them or the agent.

Solar, heat pump or electric in the tropics

Solar does its best work in the dry season, under clear skies. January's average of 5.7 hours of sun is when a solar system leans on its booster, so ask how the booster is set up and when it runs.

A heat pump in Darwin never has to work in sub-zero air, which is the hard part of the job down south. Ask how loud it is and where it will sit, since the outdoor unit runs whenever it heats.

Both can earn STCs if the model is on the register and below the size cap, which is 425 L for air source heat pumps and 700 L for solar water heaters. The install also has to meet the Territory's licensing requirements. Our STC page explains how the discount reaches you, and the scheme runs until 2030.

Temperature and safety

Keep stored hot water at 60°C or above. The Australian Building Codes Board says that significantly reduces Legionella growth, and that turning storage down promotes it, which holds in the tropics as much as anywhere.

Whether an NT replacement must include a tempering valve isn't something we could confirm. Ask the plumber to spell it out in the written quote. Our tempering valve guide explains what one does.

Who can install it

Under the NT Act, installing, repairing or connecting a hot water service is plumbing work, and it needs a licensed plumber. The owner-occupier exception for small repairs covers cold water fittings only; an installation with an electric heating element is outside it.

When the work is done on its own, the NT Building Regulations require notice to the Director within 7 days, with a building practitioner's certificate that it meets the code. Ask who lodges it and for your copy.

Questions for a Darwin hot water plumber

  • How does this system cope with wet season cloud?
  • Is the model on the STC register, and is that discount already in the price?
  • Will this replacement include a tempering valve, and why or why not?
  • Who lodges the certificate, and when will I get a copy?
  • Where will the unit sit, and how is it fixed down for cyclone season?

What we would do

If your current system still works, use the dry season to plan, while the sun is strong and there's no rush. Get two written quotes that name the model, the STC discount and the final price, and ask each plumber about the booster or the noise. Before work starts, check the licence number with the Plumbers and Drainers Licensing Board.

Questions people ask

Does solar hot water work through Darwin's wet season?

With less sun. Darwin Airport averages 5.7 hours a day in January against 10.4 in August, so the booster does more of the work in the wet. Ask how yours is controlled.

Can I replace my own hot water system in the NT?

No. The NT Act treats installing a hot water service as plumbing work for a licensed plumber, and the owner's exception doesn't reach installations with an electric heating element.
