Who supplies what
Riverina Water is a county council: Wagga Wagga City Council is one of its constituent councils, and it supplies drinking water across the Riverina. A leak in the street, or a main that has burst, is a call to Riverina Water. A leak on your side of the boundary is a job for your plumber.
Your sewer is a separate service. Your rates notice shows who provides it. Before paying for a blockage near the boundary, ask the sewer authority where its pipe ends and whether it will clear its own side. Our guide to who owns the sewer pipe shows why that matters.
Wagga's climate and homes
Long frost records
Wagga Wagga AMO has 85 years of records, from 1942 to 2026. It averages 49.6 days a year at or below 2°C and 21.5 at or below 0°C, with a July mean minimum of 2.8°C and a low of -6.3°C.
Dry, but not always
The same station averages 571.6 mm of rain a year, yet has logged 110.8 mm in a single day.
Houses and renters
At the 2021 Census, 85.5% of occupied homes in Wagga Wagga City Council's area were separate houses and 9.2% flats or apartments. 32.7% were rented.
What you can check, and what to hand over
You can
- Find your stop tap and meter, and turn the water off if a pipe is leaking.
- Read the meter with every tap off: if it moves, there's a leak somewhere.
- Lag exposed outdoor pipes before winter.
- Clear leaves from gutters and stormwater grates.
Leave to a licensed plumber
- Repairs to water, sewer or gas pipes: anyone contracting for that work in NSW needs a contractor licence.
- Replacing a hot water system, including the temperature control device NSW requires.
- Clearing a sewer blockage and finding out which side of the boundary it's on.
Hot water in a frosty town
Every hot water heater replacement in NSW needs a temperature control device, so showers, baths and basins stay at or below 50°C. If you're moving to a heat pump, ask how the model handles a cold Wagga morning. An Energy Savings Scheme discount may cut the price through an installer partnered with an Accredited Certificate Provider; you still make a minimum payment, and the quote should show the discount. See hot water, tempering valves and NSW hot water discounts.
Checking the licence
Search any Wagga plumber on the NSW Public Register. It lists the licence categories and expiry, along with conditions, cancellations, public warnings and penalty notices. The licensee's name and number must also appear in their ads. See our NSW page and licence check guide. Other specialists: burst pipes, blocked drains, emergency plumbing.
What we would do
Work out the boundary before you pay anyone: a leak or blockage on the street side belongs to the authority, not to you. Inside it, use a licensed plumber who does this work every week, and in winter, ask them to lag anything exposed while they're on site.
