Hot water in Rockhampton Four types to weigh.

Rockhampton has a natural gas network, cooler winter mornings than the coast further north, and plenty of sun, so all four hot water types are on the table. Queensland's rules apply to whichever you pick. We'll match you with a licence-checked hot water specialist.

What's different in Rockhampton

Mains gas is an option

Rockhampton is on the Queensland Government's list of natural gas distribution networks, so some homes can use piped gas. Others run on LPG. Check your bill, or the bottles, before pricing a gas unit.

Cooler July mornings

Rockhampton Aero's July mean minimum is 9.8°C, and it averages 1.0 day a year at 2°C or below. A heat pump draws heat from that air, so ask how the model you're quoted handles a cold start.

Sun, with a winter dip

Mean daily solar exposure at the airport is 20.2 MJ per square metre across the year, but 13.8 in June (1990 to 2026). Solar quotes should explain boosting through June and July.

Mostly houses

88.1% of occupied homes in the Rockhampton council area were separate houses at the 2021 Census, and 32.1% were rented. Renters should tell the landlord or agent before booking.

The rules any new system must meet

Queensland requires a temperature control device on every new and replacement hot water system, gas, electric, solar or heat pump. Read tempering valves for what it does.

Water must be heated to at least 60°C to prevent Legionella growing, and the state's guidance is a maximum of 50°C delivered at the taps. Leave the thermostat setting alone; Queensland Health says a licensed electrician should adjust it.

For solar and heat pump systems, the installer must be a hot water installer with the QBCC's solar and heat pump endorsement. For gas, the connection is licensed gas work.

Four types, Rockhampton notes

Gas (mains or LPG)Whether your street has mains gas, or the house runs on bottles; the appliance must match the gas.A licensed gasfitter for the gas work, with the temperature control device fitted.
Electric storageTank size for the household. No electric restriction appears in Queensland's hot water guidance.A licensed plumber.
Heat pumpPerformance on 9.8°C July mornings, and where the outdoor unit goes.An installer with the QBCC solar and heat pump endorsement. Models under 425 L on the register can create STCs.
SolarBoosting through June, when exposure drops to 13.8 MJ per square metre a day.The same endorsement. Systems under 700 L on the register can create STCs.

Help with the cost

STCs, small-scale technology certificates, can take money off an eligible heat pump or solar system. Owners often assign them to an agent for a discount or a delayed cash payment, and they're issued until the scheme ends in 2030. See STCs explained.

Our research hasn't confirmed a current Queensland Government hot water rebate, so we haven't listed one. Any change will show on our Queensland rebates page.

Questions to ask a Rockhampton hot water plumber

  • Can this system be repaired, or has the tank failed?
  • Is my house on mains gas or LPG, and does this unit suit it?
  • How does this heat pump perform on a cold July morning?
  • Do you hold the QBCC solar and heat pump endorsement?
  • Which STC discount is in the price, and is the model on the register?

If it fails without warning

  1. Make it safe

For a leak, close the cold water valve into the unit. Turn off power at the switchboard, or the gas at the unit if it's safe.

  2. Note the details

Brand, model, date and fuel type from the label.

  3. Call a specialist

A hot water plumber can tell a failed part from a failed tank, and quote both ways if it's borderline.

What we would do

Find out if the house is on mains gas or LPG before you choose, because it changes what's practical. Get a repair-or-replace answer from a hot water specialist, then compare two types side by side, with the temperature control device and any STC discount written into each quote. For a heat pump, ask about cold-morning performance; for solar, ask about June. Check the installer's QBCC endorsement or gas work licence before you agree.

Questions people ask

Can I get mains gas hot water in Rockhampton?

Rockhampton is on the Queensland Government's list of natural gas distribution networks, but that doesn't mean every street is connected. Check your gas bill or ask a gas fitter; homes without mains gas can use LPG.

Does Rockhampton get cold enough to worry about a heat pump?

Rockhampton Aero's July mean minimum is 9.8°C and its record low is -1.0°C. That's mild, but ask the installer how the model performs on the coldest mornings.

Do I need a tempering valve on a replacement?

Yes. Queensland requires a temperature control device on all new and replacement hot water systems, including a straight swap.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
