What's local about hot water in Newcastle
Soft supply, little scale
Hunter Water's figures for June 2020 to May 2025 give median hardness of 55.9 mg/L at its Grahamstown and Tomago Sandbeds plant and 49.0 mg/L at Dungog. If a tank fails here, ask what actually broke rather than blaming hard water.
Mains gas reaches Newcastle
Jemena distributes natural gas in Newcastle. Where your home is connected, gas storage and continuous flow units stay on the table.
Cooler mornings at Williamtown
The Bureau's Williamtown RAAF station averages 3.5 days a year at 2°C or colder and a July mean minimum of 6.5°C. Nobbys, by contrast, averages 8.5°C in July. A heat pump takes its heat from the outside air, so ask how a model copes on those mornings.
Plenty of renters
36.6% of occupied homes in the City of Newcastle council area were rented at the 2021 Census. Tenants should tell the landlord or agent as soon as the water runs lukewarm.
Repair first, if it's worth it
Many faults are parts: a thermostat, an element, a valve, a pilot. A plumber who specialises in hot water can usually tell you whether it's a part or the tank. A leak from the tank body itself is the point where replacement usually starts to make sense.
If water is pooling under the unit, turn off the cold water valve that feeds it, then switch off its power at the switchboard or turn off the gas at the unit. See our no hot water guide.
What NSW requires when the unit is replaced
Building Commission NSW requires a temperature control device on any replacement water heater, whatever its type or location. An identical model gets one too. The only exception in the rule is swapping a solar collection panel on its own.
That device holds water at the shower, bath, basin and bidet to 50°C. The tank still stores water hotter, because Legionella growth drops sharply at 60°C and above. See our tempering valve page.
Replacing an existing system is minor work under NSW rules, so no Notice of Work is lodged first. The job still ends with a Certificate of Compliance, and you are owed a copy. If the new unit runs on gas, the gas side needs a licensed gasfitter, who certifies the work separately with Building Commission NSW.
Choosing the next system in Newcastle
| What to weigh | Help with the cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Heat pump | Ask where the unit will sit and how it performs on a cold morning. | An Energy Savings Scheme discount may apply, and small-scale technology certificates (STCs) for registered models under 425 L |
| Solar | Ask about roof space, and whether the booster runs on gas or electricity. | STCs for registered models under 700 L, and possibly an Energy Savings Scheme discount |
| Gas storage or continuous flow | Only where the home has a gas connection. A licensed gasfitter does the gas work. | No scheme covered on this page |
| Electric storage | A like-for-like swap still needs the temperature control device. | No scheme covered on this page |
How the NSW discount works
Energy NSW calls its Energy Savings Scheme help a discount, not a rebate, and it only applies when you switch to a heat pump or solar system. The figures it published, up to $640 replacing an electric heater and up to $330 replacing gas, are labelled indicative only. The scheme rules changed on 7 September 2026, so treat any number as a guide.
You still make a minimum payment toward the system and its installation. Installers must partner with an Accredited Certificate Provider, and Energy NSW tells customers to get quotes confirming the discount is included. Our NSW hot water discounts page has the detail.
Questions for a Newcastle hot water plumber
- Is this a part that can be replaced, or has the tank itself failed?
- Does the quote include the temperature control device NSW requires?
- For a heat pump, where will the unit go, and how does it run on a cold morning?
- When will I get the Certificate of Compliance, and the gas certificate if there's gas work?
What we would do
Get the failed unit diagnosed before you shop. With Newcastle's soft water, a single failed part is worth ruling out. If it's finished, decide the type first, then ask for one written quote showing the system, the tempering valve, every discount and the amount you pay. A hot water specialist who installs here every week will lodge the NSW paperwork without being asked.
