Hot water in Mackay Repair, replace, comply.

A hot water call in Mackay comes down to one of two answers: replace a part, or replace the system. If it's the system, Queensland's rules decide some of what goes in. We'll match you with a licence-checked plumber who specialises in hot water across Mackay.

Mackay specifics for hot water

Colour at the tap

Mackay Regional Council puts blue or green water down to copper pipe corrosion, which it says is common in new homes. Brown water comes from maintenance work or pipe corrosion. If it only shows at the hot taps, mention that to the plumber.

No published hardness figure

Council's testing page grades water by hardness: under 60 mg/L soft but possibly corrosive, 60 to 200 good quality, 200 to 500 rising scaling. We found no figure for Mackay's own supply, so ask the plumber what they see inside old tanks.

Winter sun is lower

The Mackay M.O station averages 20.8 MJ per square metre of solar exposure a day over the year, but 14.7 in June (1990 to 2026). The July mean minimum is 13.2°C, with 0.0 days a year at 2°C or below.

Mostly owner-run houses

At the 2021 Census, 84.7% of occupied homes in the Mackay council area were separate houses and 28.6% were rented. If yours is one of the rentals, tell the landlord or agent before booking.

Queensland's replacement rules, briefly

Temperature control device. It's required on all new and replacement systems in Queensland, including a like-for-like swap. See tempering valves.

Temperatures. Water has to be heated to at least 60°C so Legionella can't grow, and delivered at no more than 50°C at the taps under the state's guidance. Queensland Health says thermostat adjustments are for a licensed electrician.

Installer. Solar and heat pump systems need a hot water installer with the QBCC solar and heat pump endorsement. Check it on the QBCC register before signing.

Signs it's time to call a hot water plumber

  • Water pooling under the tank, or rust at its base.
  • The relief valve dripping all the time, not just now and then.
  • Hot water that runs out much sooner than it used to.
  • Rumbling or banging from the tank as it heats.
  • Your myh2o account flagging higher than normal use with no change in the household.

Repair or replace in Mackay

Thermostats, elements, valves and anodes can usually be replaced. A tank that's leaking through its own wall can't. A plumber who works on hot water every week can tell you which in one visit, and whether the age of the system makes a repair poor value.

Photograph the label with the brand, model and manufacture date before they arrive. It also helps to know if you're on electric, heat pump, solar or gas, and for gas, whether it's LPG bottles or a mains supply.

STCs and rebates

STCs (small-scale technology certificates) can lower the price of an eligible heat pump or solar system when you assign them to an agent, who gives you a discount or a delayed cash payment. They're issued until the scheme ends in 2030. Read STCs explained.

No current Queensland Government hot water rebate has been confirmed in our research, so none is covered on this page. See our Queensland rebates page.

What we would do

Get a hot water specialist to diagnose it before you start shopping, because a valve or element is a far smaller job than a new system. If it's time to replace, get one quote that lists the system, the temperature control device and any STC discount, and for solar ask what June looks like. Check the QBCC endorsement for solar or heat pump installers yourself. And if myh2o shows a jump in use, look at the hot water relief valve first.

Questions people ask

Why is there blue-green staining under my taps in a new Mackay house?

Mackay Regional Council says blue or green water comes from copper pipe corrosion, which is common in new homes. Flush the tap for 2 minutes; if it persists, have a plumber look at it.

Does a like-for-like hot water replacement in Queensland still need a valve?

Yes. A temperature control device must be fitted to every new and replacement system, regardless of type.

Is Mackay's water hard on hot water systems?

We couldn't find a published hardness figure for Mackay's supply. Council's own scale says above 200 mg/L brings scaling problems, so ask your plumber whether scale shows in the old tank.

Tell us the problem. We'll find the specialist.
