Gold Coast conditions that matter for hot water
Strong summer sun, half that in June
At Gold Coast Seaway, mean daily solar exposure is 24.0 MJ per square metre in January and 11.7 in June (2007 to 2026). If you're weighing solar, ask how the system performs in the June figure, not the January one.
Mild winter nights
The Seaway's July mean minimum is 12.1°C, and it averages 0.0 days a year at 2°C or below. A heat pump takes its heat from the outside air, so that's the figure to raise with an installer.
Blue water at the tap
City of Gold Coast says blue, bitter or metallic water usually comes from copper pipe that has sat unused and slightly corroded. Run the tap and see if it clears before blaming the heater.
A third of homes are rented
In the Gold Coast council area, 33.8% of occupied homes were rented at the 2021 Census. If that's you, report the fault to your landlord or agent before anyone books a replacement.
Repair or replace?
Parts such as a thermostat, element or valve can often be replaced. Water leaking from the tank itself usually means a new unit. A hot water specialist can tell the two apart in one visit.
Write down the brand, model and date from the label before the plumber arrives. Our pages on hot water repairs and replacements cover the common faults and what changes the job.
What Queensland requires on a replacement
A temperature control device. Queensland requires one on all new and replacement systems, so a like-for-like swap still needs it. Our tempering valve page explains what it does.
60°C in the tank, 50°C at the tap. Water must be heated to at least 60°C to control Legionella. The state's guidance is a maximum of 50°C delivered to taps. Queensland Health says thermostat changes should be done by a licensed electrician.
The right installer. A heat pump or solar system must be fitted by a hot water installer with the QBCC's solar and heat pump endorsement. Check it on the QBCC register before you sign.
Registration. Installing, replacing or removing a water heater in an existing home is notifiable work. The plumber registers it with the QBCC within 10 business days of invoicing, and a copy should reach you.
The main types, for a Gold Coast home
| What applies here | Ask about | |
|---|---|---|
| Gas, storage or continuous flow | Queensland's hot water page sets no replacement restriction, so gas can replace gas. | The temperature control device, and whether your gas supply suits the new unit. |
| Electric storage | No restriction on electric resistance heaters in Queensland's guidance. | The tank size your household really needs. |
| Heat pump | Needs an endorsed installer. Air source heat pumps under 425 L can earn STCs if the model is on the register. | Where the unit will sit, and the noise near bedrooms. |
| Solar | Needs an endorsed installer. Solar water heaters under 700 L can earn STCs if the model is registered. | Roof direction, and how it copes on a June day. |
Help with the price
We haven't found a current state rebate in Queensland for heat pump or solar hot water. Small-scale technology certificates (STCs) are the federal option: you usually assign them to an agent in exchange for a discount, and the scheme runs until 2030. See STCs explained and our Queensland rebates page.
Questions for a Gold Coast hot water plumber
- Is this a part that can be replaced, or is the tank itself leaking?
- Will the new system have a temperature control device, and where will it go?
- Do you hold the QBCC solar and heat pump endorsement?
- Which STC discount is in this quote, and is the model on the register?
- Will you register the job with the QBCC and send me the copy?
What we would do
Get a repair-or-replace answer first, from someone who works on hot water every week. If it's a replacement, decide the type before the old one fails completely, because a cold shower is a bad time to compare heat pumps and solar. Price a heat pump alongside gas and solar, and ask for one written quote showing the STC discount, the temperature control device and the QBCC registration. Then check the installer's endorsement yourself.
